A Cliché

A Cliché

This was a school assignment.
I borrowed my father’s camera.
Normally, he wouldn’t let me touch it, but
this was important.
You are kneeling on the grass.
There is a yellow car in the background.
You are smiling.
We were friends for a while.
Then we were enemies.
In this photo, however, you are smiling
and I am holding a camera.
Everyone can take a photo nowadays.
Back then, you had to wait.
The moment had to be perfect,
the light and the distance taken into account.
You had only one chance to get it right.
We missed ours.
We probably thought there would be time.
This is a cliché because you died young
and we never talked again.
